The Uganda Wildlife Crime Unit (UWCU) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to combatting wildlife trafficking with the successful execution of Operation Lawrence. In September 2024, UWCU operatives arrested a suspect and seized 27.5 kgs of elephant ivory in an operation near Kampala.
The investigation was initiated after the suspect, a Ugandan national, offered to supply a large quantity of ivory believed to have been sourced from the Kasese region of Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This area is notorious for wildlife poaching and smuggling activities. Through meticulous planning and coordination, UWCU operatives engaged with the suspect and intercepted the illegal trade before the ivory could be trafficked further.
The seizure of 27.5 kgs of elephant ivory represents a significant victory in the fight against wildlife crime, a crisis that continues to threaten Africa’s elephant populations. Authorities believe the ivory may have been poached from elephants in the Kasese region, a known hotspot for wildlife crime due to its proximity to the DRC, where cross-border trafficking syndicates operate.
